In our view, each of the different categorizations in the literature is useful but this categorization is particularly helpful in highlighting an important inﬂexion point (the beginning of the 1990s) that saw a signiﬁcant shift in migration policy. According to this categorization, what we can call the ﬁrst wave of migration took place during the 1970s and into the 1980s. However, it should be noted that it serves as only a rough guide, due to the difﬁculty of an accurate registration of second- and third-generation Latin American-Australians.
